After Care for Henna

Below are some commonly asked questions about henna application and aftercare of your design.

How long should I keep me henna on?

For a good stain it is vital to keep the henna paste on for as long as possible.  You should keep the henna on for at least 4-8 hours and if possible try to keep it on over night.

How do I know the henna is dry?

Once the henna is dry it will have a slightly different appearance and over the next few hours will begin to flake off.

When the henna is dry should I wash my henna off?

Once the 4-8 hours (or overnight) have passed then scrape off the paste.  Do not wash the paste off.  Washing the paste off with water can prevent from staining properly.  If it begins flaking off sooner that is alright, but do not flake it off yourself until the recommended time has passed.

How will the stain appear initially after the henna paste flakes off?

Once the henna paste has fallen off or removed the stain will be a light orange color.  During the next 48 hours the stain will become darker.

How long does a henna stain last?

On average, a henna design will stay on your skin from 7-10 days.

Does henna stain the same on all parts of the body?

Every part of your body will stain but your hands and feet will get the darkest stain.

Does heat help get a deeper color stain?

Yes, heat does help get a darker stain.  Some things you can try are using a blow dryer or boiling water and allowing the steam to reach the henna design.  Even when the henna is removed any sort of heat exposure will help to get a deeper color.

What color will the henna stain be?

Your henna stain (design) will initially be a light orange color.  The color will deepen from the time of paste removal to upto 72 hours.  The final color can range anywhere from a deep red to a deep brown depending on the individual.

Does waxing or shaving effect the henna stain?

It would be advised to have your waxing/shaving done 2 days before having your henna applied.  If done after henna application it could interere with the color progression.

Is there anything that might cause a poor stain?

Yes there are many things that can cause a poor stain.  Some of those things are:

  • chlorine from pools
  • bathing in a hot tub
  • lotions on your hands prior to henna application
  • washing off your henna paste with soap instead of scraping it off
  • excessively oily skin
  • removal of henna too soon
Is this the same as black henna?

There is no such thing as black henna.  The so called black henna contains PPD chemical and can be very harmful to your skin.  Real Henna is all natural and contains NO chemicals.  Henna is never black.

Here are some guidelines to follow.

  • Once the henna is applied you should try moving as little as possible because once henna dries it is suseptible to begin flaking off.
  • For the best stain avoid contact with water for 12-24 hours after removal of henna.  Contact with water during those 12-24 hours can prevent the new henna stain to darken properly.
